Experimental Aircraft

As I've mentioned, homebuilt or experimental aircraft have been around for decades. The first aircraft were all homebuilt. Even today, a century later, there are thousands of experimental aircraft at varying stages of completion in garages across the country.

Hundreds of homebuilt or experimental aircraft plans and kits qualify under the sport-pilot rules. That means you can build your own aircraft, then fly it under your sport-pilot certificate. In addition, a new type of homebuilt plane will become available called the "experimental" LSA. The new rules don't require that you construct a "major portion" (interpreted as at least 51 percent) of the experimental LSA. You now can build less than 51 percent using quick-build kits.
